When Should You Have Wisdom Teeth Removal in Dallas?

Dr. Chilcoat @ 1:09 pm

Wisdom teeth removal in Dallas is often required for the health of your smile. Say the word “teething” and most people think of a baby. However, adults can have similar painful and uncomfortable symptoms when wisdom teeth are trying to erupt. Also called third molars, wisdom teeth usually come in between the ages of 17 and 25. Impacted wisdom teeth—those that are trapped below the gum line—present the most trouble and problematic symptoms. Read on to learn more about the signs indicating that you may need wisdom teeth removal in Dallas and how the procedure is carefully addressed at Texas Wisdom Teeth.

Is It Time for My Wisdom Teeth to Come Out?

In addition to pain and pressure, the other signs that indicate you may need to have your wisdom teeth extracted include:

  • Infection in the tissue surrounding your wisdom teeth
  • Gum disease
  • Cysts or an abscess
  • A cavity in a wisdom tooth that has erupted

In addition to these symptoms, Dr. Chilcoat or Dr. Brown, your oral surgeons in Dallas, may also see other reasons for extraction. For instance, wisdom teeth often do not come in straight. Lying sideways below the gum line, a wisdom tooth can exert pressure on adjacent teeth. This can lead to crowding, improper bite alignment and other problems, too. For this reason, extraction after orthodontics is often recommended.

Erupted wisdom teeth present their own set of challenges, too. First and foremost, they can be very difficult to keep clean because they are so far back in your mouth. Consequently, pericoronitis may develop. This is an infection that happens when bacteria from food, plaque and other debris becomes trapped in the tight space between the wisdom tooth and the gum. You’ll know from the inflammation and discomfort.

How a Wisdom Tooth Extraction Works

To ensure that you are completely comfortable during your wisdom teeth removal, we use local anesthesia to numb the teeth and surrounding tissue. In addition, we offer IV sedation/general anesthesia so you can sleep through your treatment. As oral and maxillofacial surgeons, Dr. Chilcoat and Dr. Brown are licensed anesthetists and their surgical team has trained in anesthesia assisting and is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Nothing is more important to everyone at Texas Wisdom Teeth than your safety and welfare.

Post-Op Recovery

We’ll give you a complete list of orders to follow after your wisdom teeth removal to facilitate proper healing. One thing to keep in mind ahead of time is that you will need soft foods on hand when you return home. Clear fluids only are recommended for the first 24 hours after surgery. Then, you can begin eating foods such as yogurt, pudding, soft pasta, mashed potatoes and the like.
