Dental Implants

Are Dental Implants Right For You?

You Don't Have to be a Millionaire to Have a Million Dollar Smile

Dental Implants are the premier treatment option for one or more missing teeth. Dental Implants have evolved over the past forty years into a mainstream restorative option for patients who wish to have a permanent and natural looking replacement for missing teeth.

Dental ImplantsWhat is a Dental Implant?

A Dental Implant is a highly engineered titanium post which is placed into the jaw bone in much the same position as a natural tooth root. The implant is coated with titanium oxide which helps the bone adhere to the implant during the healing process. Approximately two to four months after initial placement, the implant is well healed and is as stable and sturdy as a natural tooth root. At this point, the implant is ready for restoration by a cosmetic or restorative dentist who will place a crown permanently into the implant "root" creating a natural looking, fully functional tooth which appears to be grow naturally from beneath the gum tissue. A Dental Implant is extremely natural looking, durable and has a very good success rate (approximately 90% over 40 years). These attributes have made Dental Implants one of the most sought after treatments for missing teeth.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

If you are missing one or more teeth, you may be a candidate for dental implants.

Implants can be successful in patients ranging in age from their late teens to well into their eighties.

Even if you have some health concerns, you may still be a candidate for dental implants. You will need to discuss your health with your surgeon in order to find out if you are a good candidate.

Requirements for Dental Implants:

  • Good general health
  • Adequate jaw bone depth (Inadequate bone levels can often be corrected)
  • Good Oral Hygiene
  • Patient Compliance

Your surgeon can evaluate your candidacy for dental implants based on your individual needs, health and lifestyle.

Is This Surgery?

While the placement of dental implants into the jawbone is a surgical procedure, it does not usually cause considerable post operative discomfort. Most patients report less discomfort with the placement of dental implants than with tooth extraction.

What About Anesthesia?

Your surgeon will ensure your comfort during placement of your dental implants. Every aspect of your experience in our office is directed toward pampering or patients and ensuring a relaxed and stress free environment. You will have the option of undergoing your procedure utilizing local anesthesia injection with or without nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas) or utilizing a general anesthesia. While the general anesthesia technique used by your surgeon ensures that you will remain asleep and comfortable during the procedure, it is short acting enough that you will awaken within minutes of the completion of your procedure. The non-narcotic medications used result in very few incidences of most of the unpleasant side effects generally associated with general anesthesia, such as excessive drowsiness and nausea.

While not all dental implant placements require the use of general anesthesia, it is generally recommended for more extensive treatment plans.
