Dental Implant Myths:

Myth #1:  Dental Implants are too expensive!

Many patients fear that they are not a candidate for dental implants because of the expense.  The fact is, that over time, dental implants are more cost effective and more successful than many other forms of restoration.  Bridges may have to be replaced every 5-15 years, dentures and partials slip and become ill-fitting.  The maintenance and retreatment of these types of restorations can become expensive.  Dental implants are 97% successful over 47 years and they are permanant!  With dental implants, you do not have decay or increased wear on the other natural teeth.  Dental implants are, however, as susceptible to periodontal disease as natural teeth.  Dental implant patients must practice good oral hygeine and continue to get their dental cleanings every 4-6 months.

Myth #2:  Having a dental implant placed is painful!

Over 95% of patients report that having a dental implant placed is significantly less uncomfortable than having the tooth extracted in the first place.  This is because the placement of a dental implant is, by design, very precise and atraumatic to the oral tissue including the gum tissue and bone.  Most patients do not experience post-operative pain or swelling.  The tissues are preserved as much as possible in order to facilitate healthy healing.

Myth #3 Dental Implants are Experimental:

Dental implants have been a part of dentistry and oral surgery in the United States since the 1960’s.  Since then, design, materials and technique has been nearly perfected to ensure a 97% success rate over the last 47 years, or since dental implants were introduced.  It is very likely that dental implants will outlast most of the patients who have them!
