Have you committed to undergoing dental implant surgery in Dallas? With this advanced tooth replacement treatment, you’ll be able to enjoy the look and function of your full smile again! This method does involve a minor oral procedure and a recovery period. To ensure a smooth healing process and successful treatment, you’ll need to practice certain measures when caring for your new teeth. Keep reading to learn five things you’ll want to avoid right after your dental implant surgery.

#1: Don’t Eat Hard or Spicy Food

Once you leave your appointment, you won’t be able to munch on any foods that’ll require chewing. Your dentist will recommend that you stick to a soft meal diet, such as yogurt, pudding, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and even ice cream. This will allow the surgical site to heal properly, while hard and spicy foods can irritate or damage the surrounding tissues. You can improve your diet after a few weeks, but be sure to consult your dentist about which snacks to avoid in the meantime.

#2: Don’t Drink with a Straw

You’ll want to avoid using a straw when enjoying a cold beverage. Drinking through one will create a suction in your mouth that can dislodge the blood clot from the surgical site, which is essential for your healing process. Be sure to sip your beverage without a straw, at least for a week or so after your surgery.

#3: Don’t Spit Out Forcefully

Although you’ll need to brush and rinse your teeth regularly after your procedure, you don’t want to spit out forcefully. Not only can spitting irritate the tissues surrounding the dental implant, but it can also disturb the blood clot forming and setback your treatment process. Try opening your mouth and allowing the liquid to spill into the sink instead.

#4: Don’t Ignore Discomfort or Pain

Soreness, swelling, and some bleeding may be common after any oral surgery. These symptoms should also be easily managed with over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers, and they should fade away on their own after several days. If you notice any persistent or worsening discomfort, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist for help.

#5: Don’t Skip Rest

Rest is one of the most important parts of your healing process from dental implant surgery. Don’t try skipping this so that you can return to doing chores or exercising, as these can raise your blood pressure and disturb the implant site. Instead, plan on resting for at least 24-48 hours once you get back home for ideal recovery.

By keeping these few tips in mind, you can be sure to increase your chances of successful dental implant treatment. Follow your dentist’s after-care instructions, and you’ll be able to enjoy a strong and healthy smile in no time!
