If you need to have your wisdom teeth removed, don’t worry about a long or painful recovery. However, you can expect some pain and discomfort for a few days while your mouth heals. You can ensure there aren’t any complications along the way by following 8 simple tips during your wisdom tooth recovery.
1. Plan Ahead for Your Recovery
Whether you have a simple or surgical extraction, you’re going to need to take it easy for a few days. It’s best to plan for your recovery before your surgery. Besides stocking up on foods to eat, find relaxing activities you can do to combat boredom.
2. Control Any Bleeding
It’s normal for your mouth to bleed for 24 hours after your extractions. Bite on a piece of gauze for 20 minutes and change it as needed to control any bleeding.
3. Manage Your Pain
Your oral surgeon may prescribe a pain reliever or you can take an over-the-counter medication to manage your discomfort. If your pain suddenly worsens, it can be a symptom of a condition called a dry socket. Contact your dentist immediately for treatment.
4. Eat Soft Foods
Eat soft foods that require minimal chewing for the first couple of days. Temperature check your foods and drinks until any numbing agents dissipate to avoid accidental burns. Don’t have any foods that are spicy or acidic.
5. Don’t Drink Through a Straw
Your mouth will be tender, so using a straw seems like the logical solution, but it’s a big mistake. Suction can dislodge the blood clot in the extraction site too soon, which can cause your socket to get dry. It’s best to avoid any suction until your mouth has healed, including using straws.
6. Don’t Smoke or Drink Alcohol
Tobacco and alcohol affect your body’s immune system, which can increase your risk of infections and delay healing.
7. Rinse Your Mouth with Salt Water
Gently rinse your mouth with salt water to help control pain. It will also reduce inflammation and kill any bacteria. Do not rinse your mouth vigorously or dislodge the blood clot. Instead, gently swish it around and let it flow out into the sink.
8. Skip Strenuous Activities
You’ll have to skip the gym for at least one week. Strenuous exercise can increase your blood pressure, which can cause discomfort and bleeding at the extraction site. Your oral surgeon will let you know when you can resume your regular workout routine.
